  1. Taking part in at least 80% of the academic activities (put in orange in our programme)
  2. Providing the workshop leaders with the abstracts/keeping in touch with the workshop leaders about other tasks
  3. Providing (if necessary) the updated version of your abstract (another task)*, inlcuding at least 5 positions in the bibliography

In case you are ignoring the requests of your workshop leaders, you may be excluded from the participation list – in that case you become a freelancer and you are not eligible to the regular participation fee (which we hope will not happen to anyone!).

*In case of a different form of the workshops, the workshop leader decides what they need

PS. If you find any kind of mistakes at the list, please let us know – also if by any chance you do not see your name at the list and do not know what happened with it.

Application Form&Payment Details

Application Form

The seminar will be held on 9-15 July 2018.

We ask applicants to fill in the application form linked below. Please explain in detail why you are interested in joining the workshops that you indicated in the form. In addition, we require some information concerning your personal data, food preferences, etc.

The application period is open until 21th May, 23:59:59 CET. The list of participants will be published by the end of May unless a prolongation of the application period will be necessary. At the same time, an unranked waiting list will be announced. Applicants will be informed about the results via e-mail.

Participants will be selected by a committee of ISHA Warsaw members according to the following criteria:

1) At least one person from each section.
2) Quality of motivation.

No preference is given to ISHA officials in the application process.

Before applying, please read the workshop descriptions.

APPLY NOW (CLICK).

Fee and Payment

The participation fee for the seminar will be 90€. The fee includes:
– 6 nights in a hostel;
– 3 meals per day;
– a field trip;
– public transport in Warsaw during the seminar;
– free entrance to some institutions, museums etc.;
– guided tours in Warsaw.

Selected participants will be asked to pay 40€ in advance. This first installment of the fee must be paid within a week after the announcement of the participant list. Those who do not pay by that time will be replaced by persons from the waiting list*.

Bear in mind that only members of ISHA are eligible for the 90€ participation fee. If you are not a member you will be asked to fill a membership form and pay an additional 10€ fee for one-year membership in ISHA. However, first-time participants at an ISHA seminar are exempted from paying the membership fee.

* – In special cases, the deadline might be prolonged. We ask participants who are unable to pay at once to contact us via e-mail.

EqualitISHA

We adopt the EqualitISHA system, first introduced by our colleagues from Berlin in occasion of ISHA Autumn Seminar 2016. In brief, the system is aimed at reducing wealth inequalities between the members of ISHA community.

If you want to partake in this noble project, you are asked to pay 5-20€ in addition to the participation fee. That money might help those for whom the fee might result too high.

Those interested in receiving financial assistance shall pay the full fee. However, after the seminar they will obtain a reimbursement, the exact sum of which will depend on the amount of contributions received from benefactors.

We strongly emphasize that the participation in EqualitISHA will in no way affect the application process. The quality of your workshop motivation is all that matters.

General Concept of the Seminar

In July 2018 ISHA Warsaw will host the ISHA Summer Seminar 2018. Our seminar topic is to discuss the interconnection of cities and societies.

The emergence of the city is one of the first marks of human high culture – an important part of what has traditionally been called the “birth of civilization”. The emergence of large centres of population allowed ideas to be developed and circulated at an unprecedented rate. Science, philosophy, or… historiography  are all among the products of increasingly urbanised societies. In a similar way, the development of cities heavily influenced processes of economic and political centralization, and was in turn shaped by them. Naturally, there is also a ‘dark side’ to this: for example, deadly epidemics or even organised crime could arguably not have flourished without the existence of dense urban habitats.

Based on our everyday experience, a general definition of the term “city” seems easy and obvious. However, it is clear that we are dealing with a very complex phenomenon that can be approached from many different ways and lead to multiple, perhaps even contradictory definitions. The same holds true for “society”, the other central term of our seminar. Philologists might point to the common origin of both words: Latin, and hence the cultural sphere of Roman and early medieval Europe. However, the definition of “civitas” and “societas” (and their modern counterparts in Romance and other languages) have evolved over time. We need to keep asking, for any given time and place, what their exact meaning is: What elements does a “society” consist of? How is it different from the “state”? Is a “city” part of a “society” or does it constitute one of its own? (and many more questions)

During our seminar, we want to investigate cities and societies from a variety of angles, for example:

  • in terms of the relationship(s) between different (types of) human settlements: is there an eternal dichotomy between the city and the countryside? What are the reasons and outcomes of rivalries between cities..?
  • the relation between humans and their habitats: how do humans shape the city/society they live in, how are they shaped by their surroundings? What role do architecture, city planning, urbanism play in social policy, in human every-day life…?

From this very short list, it is already clear that questions of city-society relations are deeply fascinating and relate to all kinds of case studies and methodological frameworks.

We invite you to present and discuss a broad spectrum of topics and sincerely hope that the workshops – ranging from epoch-specific to ‘timeless’ themes – will lead to vivid exchanges among all participants. We also hope that the host city Warsaw, with its long and multifaceted history, will provide further food for thought and discussion. Stay tuned!

ISHA Warsaw Board 2017/2018

Hello everyone!

Recently, there have been some changes regarding the line-up of the board of our section. It’s a good opportunity to present our officials to you:

Roman Drecki – President
Roman is involved in ISHA pretty long and it’s his second term as the President. He took part in most big conferences (co)organised by ISHA Warsaw: “Russian Polish Entangled History” in Moscow,”Historical Education and Science in Central and Eastern Europe” in Lviv, “Polish-Russian Relations in the Past” in Warsaw, the conference in Teheran and some smaller events.

Magda Próchniak – Vice-President
Currently on exile in Erasmus, but still able to coordinate organizational stuff for the Summer Seminar in July, 2018. She has been the vital part of our section from its very beginning, taking part in many seminars and conferences.

Kuba Spiechowicz – Treasurer
Kuba joined our section last year. Impressively active from the very start, he helped in the organization of the Polish-Russian Conference that held in Warsaw. This year, he took on the responsible task of being our treasurer.

Kasia Wardzyńska, Paweł Kaczmarski – Secretaries
Both freshers in the board. Paweł was bold enough to partake in our Iranian adventure. When – along with other participants – he was starving in the desert, he promised himself that one day he would become an ISHA official. He succeeded the very next year. Kudos!
Kasia has just finished her first year, having nailed the most difficult and stressful exams in her course of studies. However, nstead of taking a gap year, she decided to engage in ISHA activities. We are really happy to have such an ambitious and open person in our team!

Of course, although our former board members decided to make place for new people, we still can count on their help.

Yours
ISHA Warsaw (new) Board
